Changing the World One Dog at a Time

How do 4th graders at OES change the world one dog at a time??

We had one last activity for our “Walk on the Wild Side” PBL unit.  Our students helped to build a doghouse to donate to a Spartanburg organization called Project PAWW.

This is not a typical dog rescue group, although they do find dogs that are chained and typically ignored and try to help the owners understand there is a better road to responsible pet ownership.  They donate doghouses to outside dogs without one, straw for bedding and protection against the snow and rain.  Flea collars and heartworm pills, water bowls, and food are donated to dogs in need.

When they heard about our completed doghouse they went on a search for the perfect dog-in-need close by in the Chesnee area.  The volunteers at PAWW picked up our doghouse this week at school!! We also donated other needed pet supplies and dog food.

Excited about giving a dog in need some food! :)

Awesome job, 4th grade!! We are all so proud and thankful for the generosity in helping this family and their dog in our community!

How is the Government like a Tree??

We have been learning about the US government in Social Studies. The government is like a tree because it has three BRANCHES (not real branches of course...), but we can tell you what we learned about the branches of government as we did activities exploring the Constitution on our ipads and created tree pictures to remind us about the three branches of government. Check out what we learned below!

Exploring the Constitution on the "Constitution" App!

Here are pictures of us creating our "trees" with details about the three branches of the US government!

THE BRANCHES OF GOVERNMENT

BY: Matthew Harling

There are three branches of government, 1 of them is the legislative branch, another is the executive, and the 3rd is the judicial branch. The executive has the president and vice president. The legislative makes the laws. Last but not least the judicial decides if the law is going to be a law or not be a law by looking at the Constitution.

There are three branches of government the 1st- branch is the judicial branch, the judicial branch judges the laws and the people who break them. The 2nd- branch is the legislative branch who makes the laws. The 3rd branch is the executive branch which has the presidnt and he executs the laws. –Ashton Lewis

I Wonder...How do magnets work?

I wonder..what is magnetism??

We explored magnetism through rotating stations in the "Wonder Room." We looked at how magnets attract and repel, experimented with how many paperclips magnets could hold, which materials were attracted to magnets, and explored iron shavings. Check out the pictures and what the students learned below!

I learned other things can still attract that magnets can attract to metal, coins, or other pieces of metal. I also learned that a big magnet can attract smaller magnets. Something else I learned is that magnets can attract behind a piece of paper. I learned that plastic can surround the outside of metal but the metals can still attract. I learned about the north and south poles and how they attract and repel.

magnetism

I learned that if you put a conductor under a piece of paper that if the magnet is strong that the paper will move with the magnet.
