One Small Square

When learning about how to make detailed observations, we picked up our shovels and pencils and headed outside to observe "One Small Square" of the backyard of our school.

What do you see? What do you feel? What do you hear? What do you smell? What do you..well we skipped the taste this time!

The book inspiration to this activity that we explored is One Small Square:Backyard by Donald Silver.

  1. I love the curiousity and inquiry that took place in this activity. So much activity and wonder in one small square. It's amazing how much we take for granted and how much we overlook. I hope through this activity that you not only learned the importance of quantitative and qualitative observation but also the importance of our impact on the world. While the things we do to negatively effect the environment may not seem like a big deal, when everyone negatively contributes in this way it can become a really significant issue. Do you agree? What are some "small" things that we do that can really harm our environment? Thanks for sharing your learning with me!
