I Wonder...What causes Shadows??

To learn about what causes shadows and why shadows change throughout the day, the girls created their own "shadow stick" using clay and a pencil. The flashlight represented the sun, and they would shine the flashlight at different angles to observe what happened to the pencil's shadow!

Peyton-"The shadow points the opposite way of the flashlight (sun)!"

Morgan-"Ohhh I see it now! The sun looks like it rises, but when the earth rotates the sun shines at different angles!"

Katherine-"Look how small the shadow is when you put the flashlight on top of the pencil, Reagan, you can barely see anything!"

We also created "shadow clocks" to observe which way the sun appears to rise and set, and the length and direction of the shadows at different times of day.

Here's an example of a shadow clock:

Noon-The shadow is the shortest when the sun is directly overhead.

Morning-The sun is in the east, and the shadow points to the west.

Evening-The sun is in the west, and the shadow points to the east.

Girls/parents-What did YOU learn about what causes shadows and how they change??
