"Build-a-Boat"

To integrate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) with our Science Unit on Magnets, the girls participated in a "Build-a-Boat" activity (instead of "Build-a-Bear") where they were challenged to use a limited amount of materials within a budget to build a boat that would float that had to move from one side of a container to the other *only* using magnets!!

First, the girls planned their "shopping list" of materials to use within a budget of $15.00. They did a great job using math skills, and some even came up with the idea to save a "rainy day fund" of about $5 to buy extra materials on their second shopping trip if their original materials did not work! Way to be financial planners, girls!! :)

Here is the "Build-a-Boat" store with materials such as paper towel tubes, duct tape, water bottles, popsicle sticks, etc.

After planning and shopping, the girls went to work building and testing out their boats to see if they float and can be moved by magnets!

Check out these videos of the girls explaining their boat designs using problem solving skills and their knowledge of magnets:
